Farewell To Ninian Park (1910 – 2009)
Sloper Road, Cardiff, CF11 8SX, Wales

Ninian Park was a football stadium in Leckwith, Cardiff, Wales. Until 2009, it was the home ground of Cardiff City F.C.

Ninian Park is named after Lt.-Col. Lord Ninian Edward Crichton-Stuart (15 May 18832 October 1915), son of John Patrick Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute (12 September 18479 October 1900).

The ground featured large floodlights in each corner and a plasma-screen television showed highlights during the game. The television was bought by the club in 2002 from Bolton Wanderers, who had previously used the screen in their former ground Burnden Park before moving to the Reebok Stadium, and was located between the Popular Bank and the Grange End.

The last ever Cardiff City football match played at Ninian Park was a 3-0 defeat to Ipswich Town, who had Roy Keane as their new manager in his first match in charge, on 25 April 2009. The club relocated to their new all-seater stadium (capacity nearly 27,000) for the 2009-10 season, and the 99-year-old Ninian Park was demolished later in 2009 to make way for a housing development.

The last ever football match played at Ninian Park was a Welsh Schools Cup Semi-Final fixture between Radnor Road Primary school and Corneli Primary School, with Corneli Primary School edging the game after penalties in front of the Grange End.

Tue, 28th Play Royal Porthcawl. This course has staged many championships including the Walker Cup and Curtis Cup. It was formed in 1891 and has been on the present location since 1895. The honour of Royal status, was bestowed by the Prince of Wales, later the Duke of Windsor. Although a seaside course, with sea views from each hole, the inland part is more like moor land turf with heather, bracken and gorse. With holes facing every point of the compass, the golfer is often tested by the wind. 18 holes, 6406 yards, par 72.

Wed, 29th Play Southerndown. Founded in 1905, has been touched by some of the most respected golf course architects in the world, and it shows. Willie Fernie designed the original course with later modifications coming from the respected Herbert Fowler and then Willie Park. And it doesn’t stop there. The great Harry Colt decided to have his way with Southerndown’s gorse-lined fairways and then came the finishing touches from Donald Steel. Undulating fairways and tight lies give the course a downland/links character. Bracken and gorse punish wayward shots and on windy days golfers need to negotiate the hazards with care. There are many longer courses, but few with a finer set of par-threes. Equally memorable are the closing holes, usually played into the wind. The 18th in particular with its intimidating gorse and renowned split-level fairway will live long in the memory.

Thu, 30th Play Pyle and Kenfig Golf Course, affectionately known as ‘P & K’. With its lofty sand dunes hugging the South Wales coast of Porthcawl is situated in a wonderful stretch of golfing country that is also home to Royal Porthcawl Golf Club. Established in 1922 the original course was laid out by that great architect H.S.Colt. Glorious views and historic associations adorn this undulating course with its natural hazards of hillocks, vall eys and towering dunes.

Fri, 1st Play Pennard, one of the oldest, established links courses in Wales having been founded in 1896 and designed by the great James Braid, the Scot responsible for some of the most famous golf courses in the world. It is a classic seaside links course and enjoys a dramatic clifftop setting that affords mesmerising views across Swansea. 18 holes, 6030 yards par 71.

Sat, 2nd Play Rolls of Monmouth. This stunning woodland course. Former world No.l Greg Norman the Rolls’ touring professional in the 1980s once said the four shot holes on the course were ‘fantastic’. Despite is attachment to world famous cars and rather rich goflers, the Rolls is a largely unknown golf course but is perhaps too big to be labelled a ‘hidden gem’. The lush parkland course is surrounded by 600 acres of stunning woodland and has the Black Mountains as its backdrop.
